Enjoying Your Spiritual Witness

Introduction: Some of our Lord’s last words on this earth were that we should be witnesses for Him (Acts 1:8).

A witness is one who knows something by experience. God made a tremendous investment in you through the cross of Jesus. He not only saved you from sin but also to be His witness. He wants you to tell others what you personally know about His saving power. It is true you witness through your good deeds, but witnessing must also be verbal. Jesus taught that what is in your heart will come out your mouth.

Matthew 12:34 (KJV) O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. If Jesus is in your heart, your mouth will reveal Him. Witnessing is imperative for you “to deepen your spiritual roots.”

The Dead Sea is stagnant because it is always receiving and never giving out. The same is true of the Christian life. If you are always hearing and receiving but are keeping it to yourself, you will become a stagnant Christian. After prayer, Bible study, and church attendance, nothing is more important than sharing your witness in a positive way. Therefore, let’s consider the subject of witnessing…

I.} The Purpose for Sharing Your Witness

1.} Sharing what Jesus Christ has done for you should be one of the most logical, natural, and exciting things you do.

a.} Matthew 28:19-20 (GW) 19 So wherever you go, make disciples of all nations: Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach them to do everything I have commanded you. “And remember that I am always with you until the end of time.”

b.} John 15:16 (GW) You didn’t choose me, but I chose you. I have appointed you to go, to produce fruit that will last, and to ask the Father in my name to give you whatever you ask for.

2.} The Preparation To Share Your Witness. It is really not a question of whether or not you are going to be a witness, but a question of what kind of witness you will be. We are all witnesses for Christ—good or bad—but we are witnesses. Being an effective, positive witness is not an accident but the result of careful preparation.

Read 1 Peter 3:16-17 and explain why preparation for witnessing is important:

1 Peter 3:16-17 (AMP) 16 [And see to it that] your conscience is entirely clear (unimpaired), so that, when you are falsely accused as evildoers, those who threaten you abusively and revile your right behavior in Christ may come to be ashamed [of slandering your good lives]. 17  For [it is] better to suffer [unjustly] for doing right, if that should be God’s will, than to suffer [justly] for doing wrong.

3.}What four specific things should you pray for to prepare for witnessing, according to Colossians 4 ?

a.} Colossians 4:3 (GW) At the same time also pray for us. Pray that God will give us an opportunity to speak the word so that we may tell the mystery about Christ. It is because of this mystery that I am a prisoner.

b.} Colossians 4:4 (GW) Pray that I may make this mystery as clear as possible. This is what I have to do.

c.} Colossians 4:5 (GW) Be wise in the way you act toward those who are outside {the Christian faith}. Make the most of your opportunities.

d.} Colossians 4:6 (GW) Everything you say should be kind and well thought out so that you know how to answer everyone.

4.}What should be your attitude as you encounter people who do not know Jesus as Savior and Lord, according to?

Matthew 9:36 (KJV) But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

5.}Who are some of the first people to whom you should prepare to witness, according to?

Mark 5:19 (KJV) Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
